Atlanta Miller Grade School
Atlanta, Texas
The Atlanta-Miller Grade School is a historic school located in Atlanta, Texas. The school was built in 1936 and utilized funds provided by the Public Works Administration (PWA), a New Deal-era program. The one-story brick masonry building was designed with Art Deco motifs, wood windows, six classrooms, and a large auditorium. The building is one of the few remaining structures associated with the integration of students in the Atlanta school district in 1970.
Architexas was hired by the Friends of Atlanta Grade School to complete a Vision Plan and produce contract documents for rehabilitation of the school into a community center with offices, break room, and exhibit space. Once listed on Preservation Texas’ Most Endangered Places list, the Atlanta-Miller Grade School is now considered structurally stable while contract documents are completed. Architexas will also be providing a National Register Nomination in anticipation of pursuing state preservation tax credits for the project.
