Magik Theatre

San Antonio, Texas
Through the 2022 San Antonio Bond Program, Architexas was selected to lead the planning and design of facilities upgrades to the Magik Theatre. Located on the western edge of Hemisfair Park, in downtown San Antonio, the building is a 594-seat performing arts venue that supports stage productions and educational programs for children and their families. The building was originally constructed in 1895 as Beethoven Hall, and experienced an eventful history; a destructive fire and subsequent reconstruction (1913-1914), front facade demolition to widen Alamo street (1928), adaptation to the “Laterna Magika” for the World’s Fair (1968), and then as a civic theater (1982). The Magik Theatre moved into the building in 1997, and hosts students of all ages from area schools in addition to the weekend shows that invite the whole family.

Architexas is working closely with the city and the theater to fulfill the scope of the bond project, which includes updating the building to meet current accessibility and life-safety requirements, the complete replacement of mechanical and electrical systems to ensure thermal comfort while being sensitive to the building’s historic context and engaging with the energy and environment of Hemisfair Park.
