Mason County Courthouse
Mason, Texas
The Mason County Courthouse, designed by E.C. Hosford and Co., is one of two Hosford courthouses in Texas completed in 1910. The Mason County Courthouse was constructed in the Classic Revival style out of locally quarried sandstone. The courthouse is centrally positioned in the courthouse square on two city blocks and is the centerpiece of the Mason National Register of Historic Places District.
Mason County has been a previous recipient of grant awards from the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program for design documents and exterior upgrades. In 2020, Mason County selected Architexas to update the courthouse master plan, apply for a construction grant, and update design documents. A THC Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program construction grant was awarded for a full restoration.
Overnight on February 4, 2021, the courthouse was burned by an arsonist. Fortunately, the design documents were completed the same week, and critical documentation of the courthouse was provided. Architexas assisted the owner post-fire in identifying items for salvage, protection, and documentation. Planning for security, cleanout, and abatement were coordinated with the THC and insurance provider.
Architexas updated design documents to include a phased project to expedite the roof and cupola reconstruction as well as the reconstruction of all interiors.
