Shelby County Courthouse
Center, Texas
Architexas prepared a historic structures report and master plan for the Shelby County Courthouse and Square that focused on the restoration of the courthouse interior. The report was the culmination of a public programming process that established the community vision for the courthouse and square. A detailed and comprehensive evaluation of the existing conditions determined the most appropriate method to stabilize, allowing Architexas to then field measure and prepare existing base drawings of the courthouse and square. An analysis of the existing building conditions and accessibility was conducted to guide future restoration efforts.
In addition to a new elevator, improvements to the restrooms, stairwells and vestibules, the interior restoration plan recommends a new air conditioning and heating system, fire protection sprinkler and alarms, new plumbing, electrical and communications systems, as well as restored original finishes. The square was analyzed and recommendations made for a master plan which called for reinforcing a period of significance (1885-1924), and the restoration of the original northern forecourt cluster of buildings.
