Sims Library

Waxahachie, Texas
The Lyceum assembly space on the second floor of the historic Nicholas P. Sims Library is one of the most historically significant and visually appealing places in Texas. The room is visually dominated by the proscenium in a “Sullivanesque” design that crowns the stage area. The space is well preserved and provides an outstanding setting for local events including musical performances, plays, and other arts-oriented activities.
Architexas participated in the expansion of the historic library to improve function and achieve life safety and accessibility requirements, while preserving the historical integrity of building. Architexas constructed a new fire egress stair and an elevator on the west side above a previous 1980s addition. Additionally, a connecting space at the second floor was constructed over the flat roof of the addition. The connection to the west façade of the original historic library was designed to have minimal impact, preserving the original façade. This space provided for men and women’s toilets and a small lobby leading to the Lyceum. When the Lyceum is not in use for performances or community events, the library staff utilizes the lobby for children’s activities.
