Garland Downtown Square
Garland, Texas
Architexas assisted Studio Outside with the master planning and design of architectural destinations within Garland Downtown Park.
The historically significant location, at the center of Garland’s historic downtown, sought to bring vitality back to a formerly underutilized town square. An extensive master planning process determined the goals and character for a destination community asset. Architexas focused on the design of custom light fixtures along a promenade that embody movement through the space by their form and use of lighting. A custom pavilion terminates the promenade for an audiovisual-enabled multi-use small performance venue. The color and pattern of the roof are centrally hung amongst a circular “eye” with custom lighting.
The last and most significant destination structure is the observation tower. Designed to inspire whimsy and exploration, the circular second level is supported on angled posts and connected with an elliptical stair. The tubular guardrail appears to float the perimeter with hints of color on the interior surface. Colorful circular roof “pods” are reminiscent of a tree and repeat a custom perforated pattern within each leaf.
