UT Austin Garrison Hall

Austin, Texas
Architexas served as the historic preservation architect for the restoration and rehabilitation of the 1926 Garrison Hall at the University of Texas at Austin. Architexas was involved in the preservation aspects of the project, which included historic research, consultation on historic materials, construction document preparation, and construction administration. Architexas’ scope of work included restoration of the exterior doors, glazed tile, windows, wrought iron, plaster, and resolution of parge coating/waterproofing issues. Architexas designed code-compliant handrails and provided preservation consultation services on the interior where rehabilitation work had an impact on historic materials and spaces within the building.

As historic preservation architects for the project, Architexas’ work included working with the University of Texas, the construction management firm, and the Texas Historical Commission to find a compromise between obtaining energy efficiency and maintaining the building’s historic integrity. As part of this work, Architexas developed a system of retrofitting the historic windows with insulated glass so that the historic frames could be kept. This solution not only preserved the historic windows, but also allowed them to be more energy efficient while creating a more cost-effective approach over time.
