Taylor County Courthouse

Abilene, Texas
In January 2019, Taylor County was awarded a grant provided by the Texas Historical Commission’s Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program (THCPP) to update its master plan for the Historic Taylor County Courthouse. Architexas completed the master plan update, which included a reevaluation of the county’s current programming needs, evaluating the building to meet present code compliances, and updating the cost estimate. During the master plan update, the County decided to move ahead with the preparation of 95% of Construction Documents in hopes of obtaining another THCPP grant to fully restore their courthouse. Architexas prepared the construction documents while additionally assisting the County in preparing the courthouse grant application. In June 2020, the County was awarded $6 million to fully restore their courthouse. Construction is anticipated to begin at the end of 2020.

The Taylor County Courthouse was designed by architect George Burnett from Waco, Texas. The building was completed in 1915 and represents one of the finest classical revival designs in the state of Texas for its time period. It was conceived as a fully fireproof building with a reinforced concrete structure, brick and stone exterior walls, masonry and plaster interior walls, and generally non-combustible interior finishes. It is a three-story rectangular building centrally positioned in the courthouse square, which encompasses one full city block in downtown Abilene.
